Uni House, where your adventure begins.
I’ve stayed at a lot of guest houses since I came to Japan more than one year ago. Many of them are concept driven with personal drawings on the walls, or concrete minimalist design with few plants and wooden accents, the list goes on but Uni House is different. The concept behind Uni house is hidden in its Universal name, Uni as Yuri, the woman who owns the guesthouse explains stands for anything Universe, United, Unity, and in a more creative interpretation U and I. Her conception of her guesthouse house is one that welcomes, accommodates, accepts it all.
Quiet guests, private guests, raucous guests, children, long term workers, university students, retirees, gaijins, Uni has it all, and all in Unity. Yuri’s goal is felt in every moment of your stay here. Unity, the goal to accept and embrace it all.
Since I have been here I have watched the guesthouse transform into a perfect vacation spot for a child fit with every adult playing with the kids, a huge bear, playdoe, and a child chosen movie night. I have watched the neighbors come over and integrate with the guests bringing delicious treats to share, older guests bask in the quietness, and peaceful nature of the town, unwinding in the small cafes and short walks to the beach.Yuri’s concept of the guesthouse isn’t just felt in the walls of the rooms or the comfort of family dinners and meowing cats outside it spreads into the town connecting its guests with local artists, island adventures, phosphorescent plankton. The magic continues and flows into the town like veins of nourishment and joy.
Since being here I found a job watering lemons on an abandoned island, been invited to an intimate outdoor concert at a local art gallery, travelled a magical road between three islands that only opens when the tide permits, cleaned up the local beach (an activity Yuri leads monthly) and countless other things.
Before I came to Uni House I envisioned a place where I would like to go next. I wanted a place filled with sun, joy, and the feeling of lightness. I am amazed at how greatly Uni House exceeded my expectations, granting me with community, enriching cultural experiences, time for myself, and infinite opportunities to grow and play.
The gift Yuri gives is a precious rare one, a universal place that shifts for all to be. In my case it was the landing place I needed before committing to the sky again. I will forever be grateful for the Unique experience I had in this Universal place.
